Event Nails in 1967

So at this weekend's Ladies Lotto Event: Women's Work I met a very interesting man whose work on domestic violence Breaking the Silence was featured in the Slideshow. He was looking at my table with Minx and HER Event Nails on display and he said, "You're not going to believe this, but I created the idea of nail art in the 1960's." He said as an artist, he walked to in Harper's Bazaar with a pre-designed hand painted set of nails for them to use and they did a whole feature on them. I explained how I was one of the few designers doing one of a kind, hand painted, 3-D Nails that can be used in that manner. He said he even had photos from the shoot he could send me and I promised I would share them with my blog.
How exciting! Event Nails in 1967!

So here are the pics and a little more info about Mr. Michael Horn:

Michael's very eclectic background includes: award-winning film director, film producer, prize-winning painter, designer/creator of the still popular fashion fad "fingernail art" (featured in Harper's Bazaar magazine), award-winning songwriter, one of the first creators of digital online book publishing (ebooks), music and video producer, science researcher, national and international lecturer, frequent media guest, published writer, credentialed teacher, humorist, pioneer in commercial water purification applications (Starbucks), set designer, health care professional, creator of the Future Self interactive therapeutic video technique, volunteer work with children and seniors.

Michael is the creator of the Standing In Spirit regenerative movement/stress relief program .

And information about Michael's latest project, "Breaking the Silence", a new, already award-winning, film about five courageous young women, can be seen at www.breakingthesilencemovie.com. Michael also wrote the song for the movie, "I'll Be My Own Hero".

My favorite plus size blog Runway Revolution had this post about this a Cacique commercial that for some reason they're having an issue running. It's a trip--since Ashley is just stunning here.

HER Hearts...The 1970's

I saw the Runaways movie this weekend and I'm feeling very retro 1970's
--a la Cherie Currie "Cherry Bomb."

And then I came across this post my girls at MISS CREW awhile back on the China Glaze Retro Diva Collection. I adore the styling. Great job Liz.
And you already know how I feel about the long oval nails--that's always my fav.

HER Hearts...Angela Soto

If you know me, you know I change my hair a lot. And that I have a slight complex with never quite being happy. (I’m working on it). But even with all the changes, I’ve never been SHORT short.

But here I am. all chopped off—and I love it! Complements of bi-costal celebrity stylist
Angela Soto.

Angela works at Mizu New York and at Studio DNA in Santa Monica.

She is available for individual appointments at the Salons, but is also highly experienced in editorial and runway work.

Be sure to check her out and tell her Melinda sent you. (P.S. These pics are with my styling—it was even cuter when she did it.)

COVER GIRL

So my sister and I created a dream list when we were younger, usually updated during family road trips, of all the things we'd like to accomplish in life.

One of mine was "BE ON THE COVER OF A MAGAZINE BY THE TIME I'M 30". I wasn't sure quite for what--it could be my educational/activist work, it could be my art, it could be my modeling--just me in some form. (Though secretly I knew it included having an actual picture of ME would be the most awesome).

So when HER Nails was featured on the cover of Acclaim Magazine last year, I thought to myself--ok this could count! I'd be satisfied with that, though a modeling cover would really seal the deal.

So here it is! 6 months before my 30th bday, I am on the cover of a magazine:) Now granted, it's a digital magazine--but unfortunately, that's the only type the exists in the plus size world anymore. We once had a few prints magazines, that all went out of business--and I'll do a post on that later. But for now, here I am--on the Cover of Venus Diva Magazine!

The pictures aren't my favorite--but the interview is really good and is a great representation of me, my style philosophy, and my views on plus size modeling. Check it out here: http://dailyvenusdiva.com/2010/04/6996/

Latest Event Nails

So as I've mentioned, I've been busy with Minx for awhile now, but my first love is the custom Event Nails that got HER Nails up and going.

So I've been back to doing them. Check out a pair I made for myself for the numerous festivities this past weekend.
